An Open Truck Hits A Tree, Overturns and Claims Seven Pupils Lives In Rietpan, Zeerust, MEC Lehari Sends Condolence Message



A driver of a Hyundai truck which did not have a canopy lost control of the vehicle, hit a tree and overturned. This horrible accident claimed the lives of seven pupils in Rietpan, Zeerust.

The North West Provincial Department of Community Safety and Transport Management MEC Sello Lehari has sent his condolence message to the families of the seven boys killed in the accident. He has in the same breath wished speedy recovery from those suffering serious to light injuries as a result of the crash.
Departmental Spokesperson, Freddy Sepeng said: "the accident happened on Saturday. What happened is that these boys were travelling to Rietpan village when the truck they were in lost control and hit a tree. Six of the boys died at the scene and one died at hospital so, in total, seven have died. There were actually 30 people in the truck, survivors of the accident sustained serious to slight injuries, including the driver of the Hyundai truck,” He added.
Sepeng said that the truck driver had committed a crime. “Open vehicles are not allowed to carry people at the back.”

The 30 pupils were on their way home from a soccer tournament at Lehurutshe, in which under -15 and under - 17 teams were taking part. The tournament was actually organised by the community teams.

Meanwhile, a culpable homicide case has been opened.
